How to Jog Like an Olympic Athlete - The Checklist

Most people are fine being regular joggers, but if you want to take it to podium-level heights here's the bare essentials list to running like an Olympic athlete.

What you'll need:

iPod or any other mp3 player - iPod is better we'll get to why in a moment.

Under $50

Some Drive and Persistence.

Some new Nike trainers - Nike branded for a reason, read on and you'll find out why.

Checklist:

Healthy Diet: A well rounded healthy diet is one of the most effective ways of improving your overall fitness.

A Running Guide or Handbook Manual: You can find thousands on the Internet, your local bookstore or even purchase the essential running guide on our website.

Define a Simple Routine: Take a pen and paper out and draw up a weekly schedule for when you'll be running and how long for.

Diaphragm Breathing: We're actually born breathing with our diaphragm - ever see a baby's stomach rise and fall while sleeping, yep, that diaphragm breathing. Overtime most of us build the bad habit of breahting from our chest. Breathing from the diaphragm is optimal for any sport especially jogging as it improves the expulsion of carbon-dioxide and oxygen intake.

Muscle Up Those Legs: Whether you head to a gym or do some squats your plan should be to build up the leg muscles. Don't over do it though, you want your muscles to be flexible and agile not weigh you doing. That said, extra muscle is great for improved endurance.

Stretch Before and After Workout - This is so important I actually wrote a write a whole post on this - The Fascinating World of Muscle Stretching.

Carry Water: This may seem obvious, but I see people jog without water all the time. The main excuse being, carrying a bottle in my hand while running is just too much to carry. No worries, just purchase a water bottle sling or waist pack and you'll be hands-free jogging in no time.

Nike Plus: Nike Plus lets you set goals and track your running. By communicating with your Nike Plus running shoes the software tracks how many strides your taking when running and a bunch of other crazy information. Then you can view it on your device or in a web browser. If you've bought an iPod or iPhone in the last 2 years there's already Nike Plus on it - you just have to activate it and get the trainers, if not you can find out more info by clicking here.

So there you have it. Follow these instructions and your jogging performance will double, triple, quadruple...
